The need for sustainable development solutions
In 2006, the FAO reported that Indonesia’s forests are decreasing by an average of 1.87 million hectares per year. Since the green revolution, more than 1,500 local rice varieties have become extinct, and the increased use of synthetic chemicals and GMOs have dramatically impacted soil fertility. Poverty is on the rise as farmers and others are increasingly dependant on the globalizing industries. Environmental degradation and impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly obvious. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that global surface temperatures will rise 1.1°C to 6.4°C between 1990 and 2100 if current practices continue.
