DM.04 Community Risk Assessment

The Importance of community risk assessment

Indonesia’s geographical location makes it extremely vulnerable to natural disasters.  Most communities have limited understanding or awareness about the causes and impacts of disasters in their area, and therefore have difficulty evaluating their level of risk and developing effective strategies for managing those risks. Community risk assessment helps communities to understand, assess and analyze their local resources and develop strategies for disaster risk reduction and preparedness.

IDEP’s training provides a concrete opportunity to increase people’s capacity to analyze, measure and evaluate local capacity hazard, vulnerability and risk

About Effective Community Risk Assessment

Effective risk assessment needs to be coordinated with the relevant officials. Risk assessment training can assist both governmental organizations and NGOs by capacity building the skills needed for risk assessment, coordination and advocacy at the community level.

Key components of effective community risk assessment include:

  • Hazard analysis
  • Vulnerability analysis and risk reduction planning
  • Build a culture of safety and resilience through education
  • Identifying local capacity and resources
